Cornea is the transparent front surface of the eye and it is at this interface, maximum light bending occurs. Is rich in nerve supply and very sensitive. This is prone for drying, infections, inflammations. Can also get abraded.
Superficial lesions heal quite quickly while deeper ones heal with a scar, an opacity that might need grafting.It is this part that is referred to when people generally speak of eye grafting or transplantation.
Status of eye donation: In India, there is an annual requirement of a lakh corneas while only 30,000 gets harvested from donors. Family of deceased who wish to donate eyes could call to reach a centralised team who will direct the nearest eye bank to the called address for needful.
The eyes have to be harvested as soon as is possible, preferably within 2 hours, though it's acceptable to be taken in 6 hours.
